It's not really a secret that there's only about a 10% overlap in JR's and my musical interests. A few years ago, I drug him to see Mama Mia, the musical based on songs by ABBA. The show is pretty lighthearted and the dancing and music were good, so we had a nice time.
Imagine my surprise, when I hear him singing ABBA's "Waterloo" the other day. The only problem is that instead of saying "Waterloo", he's saying "Marmaduke". Oddly enough, this fits the tune, but not the reamining lyrics.
But alas, he's not the only victim of this type of mix up. When JR and I frist started dating, he spent an evening verbally cataloguing his extensive Queen collection. One of the items that he mentioned was a "storage play". I had no idea what a storage play was, but I was not about to admit it. I smiled an nodded, not realzing that the storage play was destined to come up in conversation from time to time in the following months and years.
I started to form a picture in my mind of what the storage play looked like. Having no real frame of reference, I began to invision some manner of plastic structure that would hold tapes. I wasn't really sure how the Queen motif was utilized, but that's the image I was working with.
Imagine my surprise, when I finally encountered the storage play in person. (The storage play resides at J and G's house.) It is not made of plastic and does not hold tapes or any other objects. In fact it is a very large and slightly thick poster. My response to it was "This is the storage play???" After a few minutes of conversation, it was finally revealed that storage play = store display (a larger poster sent to record stores to promote a new album release). I had simply misheard during our original conversation.
