Flea Marketing

I should be studying, so of course I'm posting to my blog instead. I'm excited to announce that I, along with two cohorts, will be having a booth at the Gahanna Flea Market on September 19th.

I'm planning to sell some of my handmade dolls, along with some other crafts. That is assuming that I can scrape together some time finish anything. I seem to have a habit of over-committing myself. But, Mom has nobly agreed to serve as my unpaid assistant, so I'm hopeful that I'll have a bountiful inventory by then.

Little Man Report: Little Man is firmly on Team Daddy these days. Most sentences directed in my direction begin with "Mommy, you no ____." A small portion of these comments are deserved; it's hard for me to remember that he is capable of doing so many things on his own now. From flushing the toilet, to turning on and off the lights, he doesn't need and usually flat refuses my help. I suppose I'm not ready for him to be so independent.

Likes - the color green, Buzz Lightyear, Team Umizoomi, counting to 20 (almost), singing ABC's, Itsy Bitsy Spider, Twinkle Star, donuks (donuts), bubble tiger/lion, the Red Store (Target), friendlies (stuffed animals)

Just One Thing

I realized that with my post yesterday, I doubled my posting for 2009, so I figured that I would go for triple!

This morning as I was getting dressed, I was faced with the difficult task to selecting an outfit that would be appropriate to wear to a meeting I'm attending after work. The typical attire is business casual, which is an area that I'm a bit lacking in on the wardrobe spectrum. I have plenty of cold weather business casual clothes that I wear during tax season, but I've been scraping by to get through the summer.

Finally, I decided on some off-white denim capris and an aqua silk blouse. This seemed like a great choice until I started applying sunscreen to E this morning. I saw his little hands reaching for the ruffles on my shirt and said "Don't touch me!" (Sidenote: E always has to have a little sunscreen {suncream} on his hands while I'm applying it on him.) So the crisis seemed averted, until I arrived at work and realized that I did not take the sunscreen into consideration when I carried him into daycare. So, there I am with large greasy spots that cannot be cleaned at work.

So, after lunch today I went out in search of a top. Sure, I could have gone home, but there's no fun in that. First I stopped at Steinmart, where I didn't find a top. However, I found some nice black capris. So, I bought those and headed to Kohls, where I located a top and some shoes (the ones I wore to work were brown and would not look good with the black capris). Then, I decided that I really should have painted my toenails, so I stopped at CVS for some polish.

That is how a simple encounter with some sunscreen resulted in me being out of the office for over and hour and purchasing an entire outfit. I'm sure all of my frugal friends are rolling their eyes. Maybe if I had E's sense of fashion I would be in better shape. After all, in his view, as long as he can wear a green shirt and green shorts, everything is good.

Back to School (sort of)

This week I started a review course designed to prepare me to take the exam to become an Enrolled Agent. Assuming that I pass each of the three parts on my first try (fingers crossed people) I will be done by the end of the year.

In order to take over the tax business one day, I need to have either an EA or CPA. Either license will allow me to represent taxpayers to IRS in an audit situation. The CPA requires an Accounting degree which I don't have and don't want to spend the time and money to get, at the moment. I may go down that path in the future, but it's not in the cards at the moment.

So, that brings me to today. This is my first experience with online learning, but I like the design of the course so far. The online quizzes allow me to test my retention immediately and there are no three hour lectures to sit through!

And a Good Birthday It Was

My expectations for my birthday this year were not high. Last year, I had a really great Mario Kart party with City BBQ, and it was hard to imagine topping that without throwing another large party. However, it turned out that a quieter and less planned out birthday can be just as wonderful. Here is a review of my birthday weekend:

Friday

JR came home a little early on Friday evening so that we could both take Eston to Emma's third birthday party. The first stop was the Kingdom of Bounce, which has six large inflatables. Eston had a great time, especially on the slides, but he still needed help so JR and I both got quite the workout. Afterward, we had dinner at Noodles & Co. Amy made the cutest cupcakes that looked like spaghetti & meatballs but were just as sweet and tasty as a good cupcake should be.

Saturday

While I was at work in the morning, JR gave me one of the best gifts I've ever gotten - a clean car! Sure I vacuum the interior when the layer of crushed cheerios gets to pervasive, but it had been a shamefully long time since I've busted out the armor-all and given it a good wipe down. In fact, JR's efforts decimated an entire dynasty of dust bunnies that have been cultivating that fruitful lands of my dashboard.

After coming home to that surprise, JR and I headed to dinner with some of his work friends. The three lawyers kept topping each other with funny stories about clients, other lawyers and the judges, keeping the rest of us in stitches the whole meal. JR and I parted ways with them after dinner and headed to the mall. Although JR had been shopping earlier in the day and had purchased one small gift, the majority of my birthday funds remained. This was no huge shocker to me, as he had lamented Friday evening that he couldn't purchase anything from Amazon and have it arrive in time for my birthday.

Well, it turns out that this is a great time of year to shop for one's own birthday gifts as there are lots of great clearance items to be purchased at great low prices! At Macy's, I found a pair of hoop earrings, a pair of pajamas and a t-shirt. After discounts and coupons, the total came to $30! JR often teases me that I have a radar that points me to the one thing in any given store that's not on sale, so this type of shopping coup was truly amazing. By that time, I feared that we would have to go home because my high heels were determined to rub every shred of skin off my feet. But JR proved once again that he's a great husband and bought me a pair of slippers. I dumped the heels in my shopping bag and wore the slippers the rest of the evening.

Sadly, I wrecked my streak by going into Sephora to purchase a lip balm at a price so high, I dare not share it with you, gentle reader. We wandered around the mall for awhile more and ended up in Hot Topic, where I either encountered the most motivated Hot Topic salesperson I've ever met or I was flirted with by a guy ten years my junior with enough facial piercings to set off the airport metal detector. Either way, he made tracks across the store when JR popped up. We decided to head home and JR did his manly duty and brought the car around so that I didn't have to trudge through the snow in my slippers.

Sunday

Lee, Jean and Corbin came by this morning for a joint-birthday summit over brunch. We had souffles from Panera, fruit salad and Mom's yummy monkey bread. Lee gave me a book and cd that were on my Amazon wishlist - much better presents than the uninspired blue polo that I gave him. Maybe if he had updated his wishlist sometime since 2008, I might have a better idea of what he would like. I tease him that he's turning into Dad, who would almost rather not get a gift at all, that's how little he wants things.

After stuffing ourselves with food, JR, Eston and I all took a nap. Is there really anything better to do on a Sunday afternoon? I got a really nice phone call from my in-laws,lots of nice messages on Facebook and some new video games.

Overall, I deem this birthday to be a success! The entire weekend was full of fun times, I consumed lots of delicious food and I loved every gift that I got. I feel so fortunate for the life that I have and all of the people who are in it. That includes you, gentle reader!

5 for 5

This summer, I've been having a great time going to garage sales. This past Friday, Captain Cuddle (trying out a new nickname for Mr. Baby, who's not so small anymore) and I joined Amy, her mom and Emma for some bargain shopping. We found a ton of great deals and Captain Cuddle fell in love with a play kitchen. JR had expressed some concerns about whether the play kitchen was masculine enough. He tentatively agreed, if I could find an "Emeril-like" kitchen. Anyway, for $5, I couldn't leave it behind. In the end, Amy and I stuffed her suv to capacity. I'm still not sure how she wedged Emma in among the stuff.

Flush with success, I loaded Mom and Captain Cuddle into the car on Saturday and headed to New Albany for more sales. Operating under the theory that people who paid a million or so for their homes would have great stuff in their garage sales, I had high expectations. Sadly, my hopes were quickly dashed. However, at the very last house, I scored an excellent and unexpected deal. I was able to get 5 ugly dolls (2 large + 3 small) for $1 each!

In unrelated news, I finished my first class at Franklin. It was only a three week introductory course, but I'm happy to report that I earned 100%!

Fridays

Fridays have always been a day to look forward to, but lately, they've gotten even better. Not only do we get to laze around the house since the office is closed, but my brother has been bringing my nephew, Mouse, over on Friday afternoons. We have lunch together and then Mom and I spend the afternoon entertaining Mr. Baby and Mouse. We enjoy it quite a bit and apparently Mouse does as well. These are some photos of him expressing his appreciation through kisses.
