I was disappointed to learn today that ethanol is not a viable solution to end our nation's dependence on oil. I was aware that ethanol fuel is not readily available at the moment, but had high hopes that with proper attention and investment, a change might be on the horizon. Consumer Reports outlined some compelling arguments as to why I am mistaken:
- E85 is not readily available
- E85 is just as expensive, if not more so than gasoline
- FFV's (flexible-fuel vehicles) get lower fuel mileage when using E85
- FFV's are not optimized to run on E85
- Ethanol emits acetaldehyde, a probable carcinogen
I suppose of all of the points above, the last one is the nail on the coffin for me. What's the point of saving the Earth if we kill all of the people?
Maybe none of this information will shock those that are more informed of these issues than I, however, I quite naively bought into the "Live green, go yellow" mentality.
IT'S MY WEEKEND ALREADY!
I'm headed to C-Bus for a long weekend to visit family and friends. Expect to see a new post from me early next week with a summary of my adventures.

:( Here's another one. Ethonal production means less crops/land/resources are available to feed the world's poor - including our own citizens. Classic can't make guns and butter scenario.
