How NOT to Win Friends and Influence People

Step 1: Call the boss's secretary (me) four minutes before her leaving time to tell her that you have a document for the boss to sign and it needs to go out today.

Step 2: Make sure that you do this on a day when the boss has back-to-back meetings and it will be nearly impossible for the secretary to catch him.

Step 3: When the secretary performs a minor miracle and gets the document printed and signed and hands it off to another secretary to handle the distributions (as instructed to do so by the boss, who does not like his secretary to stay late), complain to the second secretary. This will ensure that the boss's secretary hears about the rant the next day.

As I'm sure you can tell, I'm a bit peevish this morning. My only question now is do I confront this person, who is quite the talker and sure to spread gossip that I shirked my duties or do I just let it go, knowing that I won't be working here much longer?

Personally, I'd let it go unless the gossip or commentary gets out of hand. But if it does, or you decide you need to say something, I'd do it via e-mail. Send an e-mail to the original requestor stating that you've heard negative feedback by them from others and want to clarify. State what happened (including the last-minute request, etc.) and ask if something was done incorrectly. Innocent sounding questions usually soften the blow and allows the person to dig themselves into a hole. Copy in your boss (it is performance related, after all) and sit back to watch the show.

Unless it is really burning you tomorrow (time also gives you perspective), I'd let it go. Imagine leaving this job without any worries on your shoulders vs. leaving with a nasty situation being dealt with..maybe with bosses involved. The simple truth is she is an ungrateful, self-important person who doesn't deserve to have you waste your energy being concerned with her whining. Besides, the people there who count already know your worth.

Tell all other team members who use the bathroom, except her, to be sure to use toilet seat protectors.
