FAQ's re: The Hole

Q: How long will it take them to fix this?

A: At this point, we have no idea. Once the various plumbing and carpentry people have had a look, we might have an actual time estimate for the repairs. If I were forced to say offhand, I would estimate that the bathroom will be closed for business for 3-4 weeks, minimum.

Q: Where will you go to the bathroom in the meantime?

A: We are fortunate enough to have another full bathroom with it's own shower stall. Also, the landlord has offered us the use of the bathroom in the unoccupied garden apartment below ours.

Q: What caused this?

A: The toilet in the bathroom above ours has been leaking (clean) water into the floorboards for some time. The cause became apparent when the tenant used the toilet after the hole appeared and the water dripped out into our bathroom.

Q: Did you see any damage to the ceiling before the incident?

A: No, we noticed a little bubbling on the wall near the ceiling, but nothing to suggest what was going to occur.

Q: Did anything fall into your bathroom?

A: Other than the ceiling and some wood, no. As far as we are aware, the upstairs tenant had no idea what had happened.

Q: Did you get any sleep last night?

A: Very little. Even after I calmed down enough to go to sleep, JR was awake and walking restlessly around the kitchen, which is right next to our bedroom. In my sleep deprived state, his mocs sounded like tap shoes on the linoleum and at one point, in a half-asleep haze, I asked him to please stop walking around.

Q: How are you today?

A: Tired, but good. My day is full of things that can't be postponed, so I must push on regardless of how I feel. JR was in a "false chipper" mood (when you're so tired your body tricks you into thinking you're energetic for a short period of time before it sinks in that you're utterly exhausted) this morning. He reports that he has quite the headache now.
